My suspicion is that the original post was probably triggered by a problem other than the OS version, such as a failing HD or crud accumulated through several upgrade cycles, or the installation of software that bogs down the system. Those possibilities should be investigated before buying and installing more RAM, but we will never know what is going on unless the OP returns to the thread and posts an EtreCheck report.
